by Frank Martin
The American League's top road team keeps on rolling. The Boston Red Sox improved to 36-22 away from home with Friday's 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Red Sox enter the second of their three-game series Saturday looking to extend their winning streak against Seattle to six. Boston ended April with two home losses to the Mariners before taking the series finale on May 1 and sweeping a three-game set at Fenway Park in July.
Seattle is 7-7 since its franchise-record 17-game losing streak. A pair of aces square off Saturday - Boston's Josh Beckett and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez.

The Red Sox have opened as 147-moneyline favorites on Bet Online Sportsbook’s Live MLB Baseball Odds.
Red Sox RH Josh Beckett (9-4, 2.17 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (10-10, 3.31).
Beckett, who is 0-1 over his last three starts, has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last seven outings and 16 of 17. The 31-year-old enters with the second-best ERA in the AL and third-best in the majors. Beckett is 6-0 in seven starts against Seattle as a member of the Red Sox.
Hernandez is coming off a road outing against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday in which he suffered the loss despite yielding only two runs and four hits while striking out 12 without a walk over eight innings. It marked the league-best third time this season Hernandez reached double digits in strikeouts without issuing a free pass. Hernandez is 4-2 in 10 career outings against Boston.
Mike Carp extended his hitting streak to 12 games Friday by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. It was his third three-hit performance during the run and fourth multi-hit effort. He also has driven in 13 runs during the streak, which is the longest by a Seattle rookie since Kenji Johjima hit safely in 12 straight in 2006. Carp also has reached safely in 21 consecutive starts. Rookie Blake Beavan was tagged for six runs in 6 1/3 innings, marking the first time in seven career starts he has allowed more than three runs.
With three home runs Friday, Boston increased its major league-leading road total to 78. The Red Sox have at least one blast in each of their last 10 games away from home. David Ortiz continued his torrid pace with a solo homer and an RBI single. Ortiz is hitting .550 (11-for-20) with three homers and seven RBIs over his last five contests.
Despite notching his sixth straight victory, John Lackey has allowed four runs and at least 10 hits in three of the wins. Jacoby Ellsbury is one home run away from becoming the sixth player in franchise history with 20 blasts and 20 stolen bases, and first since Nomar Garciaparra in 1997. Ellsbury leads the club with 31 steals.
Justin Smoak's return to the Seattle lineup was short-lived. Smoak, playing for the first time since Aug. 2 because of a thumb injury, was hit by Jarrod Saltalamacchia's bad-hop grounder in the second inning Friday and suffered a fractured nose.
